The Data Story
Coming from a country where gun violence is rare, I was shocked by the frequency of shootings in Boston. This dashboard tells the story of gun violence patterns in the city, answering critical questions: Who are the victims? Where and when do these incidents occur? The data reveals a complex picture - while there's been a 41% decline from 223 incidents in 2015 to 132 in 2023, certain communities and neighborhoods remain disproportionately affected.
Design Decisions
I used Tableau Prep Builder to clean and structure the city's raw data, then designed the dashboard with multiple complementary views: a trend line showing the decline over time with a notable peak in 2020, a geographic heat map highlighting Dorchester as the primary hotspot with 269 shootings, demographic breakdowns showing the disproportionate impact on Black and African American communities, and temporal analysis revealing that most shootings occur late at night (10-11 PM). I integrated information icons throughout to provide context and enhance user understanding.
